FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – 30 October 2009

Canberra Labor Club Saves ACT Kids Lives

The Canberra Labor Club will present $35,000 to the Royal Life Saving Society - Australia in

support of the Swim and Survive Drowning Prevention, as part of the UNCLE TOBYS

®

Big Splash

Swimathon at the Canberra International Sports and Aquatic Centre (CISAC) in Bruce, ACT this

Saturday. The funds will help Royal Life Saving to reach over 3,000 ACT children with lifesaving

water safety skills.

The cheque will be presented Saturday 31 October at 2.35pm to Royal Life Saving President

Chief Justice Terence Higgins by Canberra Labor Club Vice President, Tony Luchetti, at the

Canberra International Sports and Aquatic Centre (CISAC) in Bruce, ACT.

CISAC is hosting an Active Family Fun Day and UNCLE TOBYS

®

Big Splash Swimathon that

features Commonwealth Gold Medalist and UNCLE TOBYS

®

Ambassador Jana Pittman to help

raise funds for the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia to reduce child drowning.

Child drowning remains the leading cause of accidental death in children in Australia, with 50

children aged 0-15 drowning in the past year. Teaching children swimming and water safety skills

can help protect young lives now and into their future.

Arthur Roufogalis, Canberra Labor Club CEO, says the Canberra Labor Club is proudly working

with the Royal Life Saving Society - Australia to help make a difference and reduce drowning.

“We are proud to be supporting an incredible organisation like Royal Life Saving,” Roufogalis said.

“We’re excited that these funds will help the community in such a valuable way, giving kids access

to the water safety skills and knowledge that could one day save their lives.”

“The generous support of the Canberra Labor Club will help ensure that every child in the ACT

has access to swimming and water safety education, regardless of the soci-economic

background”, said Royal Life Saving ACT CEO Sean Hodges.
