Keeping the Promise to Australia's Veterans

Legacy Week August 30 September 5

20 August, 2009

The Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC will join forces with the Chief of the Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston AC, AFC for the national launch of Legacy Week 2009 to help Legacy keep it's promise of supporting the families of deceased veterans.

Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC will be a guest of honour at Legacy's Remembrance Ceremony at the Cenotaph in Martin Place, Sydney at 12 noon on Monday, 31 August.

Her Excellency will accompany Sydney Legacy widows and children to wreath lay in support of Australian Defence Force families who have lost a loved one.

Nicole Pearce, widow of Trooper 'Poppy' Pearce encourages all Australians to spare a thought for Defence Force families this Legacy Week. Trooper Pearce was killed in October 2007 as a result of a roadside bomb attack while driving his armoured vehicle near Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan.

"Very early on I was contacted by Legacy," says Nicole. "They promised to be there for my family to ensure we cope financially and emotionally, surrounding me with a strong network I can call on at any time. After Davey's death, Legacy helped achieve one of the most important things to me that Stephanie and Hannah continue to receive a good education."

"Knowing I have someone to turn to is the greatest comfort and reassurance. I have a very thoughtful Legacy member who watches over us, and I know he does this in honour of David and all veterans who have died."

Legacy is supported nationally by Australia's leading corporations Thales, Telstra and the Commonwealth Bank of Australia which has assisted Legacy's work in the community for over ten years.

Chief Executive Officer, Mr Norris said the Commonwealth Bank is proud to support Legacy and admired the charity's long-standing spirit of service to the community.

"Legacy is an organisation that has supported the Australian community since 1923 and one which the Commonwealth Bank is honoured to partner with," he said.

This Friday 4 September, thousands of volunteers will be on the streets nationally promoting the iconic Legacy badge. You can help Legacy keep it's promise to defence families by wearing a badge, donating via 1800 LEGACY (534 229), www.legacy.com.au, or at any Commonwealth Bank branch.
