MEDIA CALL
New figures underline why community
support is vital this Christmas
30 October, 2009
On the eve of an expected mortgage interest rate increase on November 3,
Wesley Mission this Sunday will launch its 2009 Christmas Appeal in the
shadow of an alarming increase in demand for accommodation and other
support and counselling services.
Wesley Mission is aiming to raise $550,000 this Christmas and is relying on
the goodwill of the general community.
The flow on effect of the economic downturn is still washing through our
society and will continue to do so for months to come, said the Rev Keith
Garner, CEO, Wesley Mission. Many will find it hard to swim against the tide
of homelessness, unemployment and poverty.
It is easy to forget those who are disadvantaged as economic recovery
begins. Yet no one should be forgotten and no one should be left out during
Christmas and in the New Year.
