MEDIA RELEASE

20 October 2009                                FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tasmania Supports ‘Day-for-Daniel’ 2009

Day for Daniel 2009 is to be held on 30th October. Promoted as a vehicle for child safety

education it is more than an awareness day.

“Day for Daniel is what I like to call, a ‘Day-of-Action’. Last year more than 25% of all

schools in Tasmania registered their support online, the highest of any state. This year

we are looking to increase that number.” Said Bruce Morcombe

We invite all schools to take the opportunity to join us and participate in some form of

child safety education. Topics could cover; Body Ownership, Internet Safety, No Secrets,

Safety Network or improving ones Self Esteem.

Last week the Australian Federal Police Commissioner Tony Negus and Terri Irwin

(Australia Zoo) joined the growing list of supporters of Day for Daniel. NB. This vision

Background:

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established in 2005 by Denise and Bruce

Morcombe following the tragic abduction and suspected murder of their 13-year-old son

Daniel in December 2003.

Now in its 5th year the Day for Daniel continues to grow on a national scale and is

recognized as Australia’s largest participation event of its type.  In 2008 over 250

schools from all across Australia, including almost 50 from Tasmania took part and this

year up to 500,000 school aged children are expected to participate.

A variety of activities are suggested and these can range from:

a talk about internet safety in class

a presentation by a school based police officer
