QLD Governor launches Caritas Australia Project Compassion 2010 in Brisbane
On Tuesday February 16, Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley, with Archbishop John Bathersby will launch the largest
aid and development fundraising campaign in Australia, Caritas Australias Project Compassion.
Tuesdays launch marks the beginning of Caritas Australias six-week fundraising effort highlighting the progress and
challenges of the Millennium Development Goals.
Through the stories and accomplishments of six Caritas Australia program participants profoundly affected by poverty,
Project Compassion calls on Australians to strengthen the global pledge to eradicate poverty and injustice worldwide by
2015.
Lulu
Mitshabu, Caritas Australias African Program Coordinator will speak at the launch, recounting her personal
experiences from life in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and underscoring the value and urgency of Caritas
local development programs throughout Africa.
Whilst the global community is on track to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015, Lulus escape from the Congo and her
stories of the conflict, corruption and sexual violence experienced so many people in her country, are a stark reminder
of how far we have to go to achieve justice in our global community.
Caritas Australia hope this years Project Compassion will strengthen Australias capacity to engage with communities
affected by poverty and build the support necessary to realise the eight Millennium Development Goals both within
Australia and globally.
