Road Safety With A Song In Your Heart

12 October 2010

NRMA Motoring & Services' Director, Kyle Loades will today present St Benedict's Primary School with a $1,000 NRMA Safer Driving School Road Safety Grant for a "Singing Cyclist" to teach road safety to students who ride bikes to and from school.

The "Singing Cyclist" is a specialist music teacher who works with the students to make a list of road and bike safety rules which are then turned into a song.

Local NRMA Director Kyle Loades congratulated St Benedict's Primary School for making road safety a priority and praised the innovative "Singing Cyclist" project.

"The information and training made available to young children learning safer cycling habits will help to keep them alive on the roads," Mr Loades said.

St Benedict's Primary School Acting Principal Des McCosker said the bike safety song would be sung regularly at school assembly and shared throughout the school network.

"How better to remember a set of rules than to put them to music?" Mr McCosker said.

"It's all about making sure our students get to school and back home each day safely."

NRMA's Safer Driving School Road Safety Grants help communities tackle local road safety issues. This year the NRMA has awarded $100,000 in grants to 40 community-based organisations for innovative road safety programs that address issues such as safer cycling and road safety for people with a vision impairment and those who are deaf.

Mr Loades said the NRMA was proud to support road safety initiatives which make a real difference at a local level.

The NRMA has funded more than 200 initiatives since 2001. For a complete list of this year's successful applications visit www.mynrma.com.au/grants.
