Support for Kids When Parents Separate

The Child Support Agency (CSA) and Kids Helpline are working together to support kids who are having trouble coping when their parents break up.

CSA's Parent Support Services Director, Toni Brown, said Children's Week, which begins on 24 October, celebrates the right of children to enjoy childhood and is an ideal time to highlight the range of support services available for families affected by separation.

"Children are young and resilient and are less likely to be negatively affected by separation if parents can maintain a co-operative relationship," Ms Brown said.

"Latest Child Support Agency figures show the majority of separated families are working together, despite differences, for the benefit of the children.

"Children will experience a range of emotions even if their parents are working well together, post-separation. It's important they know they're not alone and that there are people they can talk to."

Kids Helpline General Manager, Wendy Protheroe, said the most common issue children call to talk about is family relationships, particularly conflict and separation.

"Last year our counsellors spoke with more than 8,000 young people about family
relationships," Ms Protheroe said.

"Almost two-thirds were worried about frequent or major family conflict and family breakdown, separation or divorce.

"Many parents don't realise that even minor conflict can be harmful for their children, so it's important for families to be aware of the range of support services available."
