Australian of the Year to lead Chisholm

conference

Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry will be keynote speaker at the Chisholm

Chatterbox conference to be held this 12th and 13th October at the Frankston Arts Centre.

The conference provides an opportunity for individuals involved or interested in a wide range

of community health areas to meet and interact.

“This is an opportunity for students, educators, professionals, volunteers and others interested

and involved in areas such as welfare, mental health, youth and aged care to meet and

explore the contemporary trends and issues impacting these areas,” said Maria Peters,

Chisholm CEO.

A highlight of the conference will be the launch of the Bachelor of Community Mental Health,

Alcohol and Other Drugs. This unique qualification was developed by Chisholm to meet the

growing demand for people with the appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to work

across the spectrum of community-based mental health and Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD)

treatment services.

“We are very proud to launch this degree,” said Mrs Peters, “It is the first dedicated

undergraduate qualification in Australia to provide specialist teaching across mental health

and AOD disciplines in the community health sector.”

The Degree has already been welcomed by a range of spokespeople across community,

industry and government, including the Minister for Mental Health, Lisa Neville.

Other speakers at the conference include Robyn Miller, Principal Practitioner in the Children,

Youth & Families Division of the Department of Human Services; Basil N Varghese, CEO,

National Education and Employment Foundation; and Professor Alasdair Vance, Head

of Academic Child Psychiatry, Department of Paediatrics, University of Melbourne.
