Children with impaired vision to learn karate

DATE:

Fri 15 January 2010

TIME:

11am – 12pm

WHERE:

Strathfield Girls High, Albert St, Strathfield

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY AND BACKGROUND:

Six children (between 6 and 9 years) who have impaired vision will get a chance to learn

karate with Seido Karate Kazoku and Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Instructors.

The opportunity is part of a one day childrens mobility program run by

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT called named Improving Balance and Co-ordination Through

Karate. It focuses on travel, mobility and orientation skills by catching public transport to

Seiko Karate Kazotu in Strathfield.

Following the karate workshop the children will take part in a Treasure Hunt in Burwood

Westfields; designed to increase their orientation skills and get them problem solving in a

busy and unfamiliar environment to increase their confidence.

The group will then practice their travel skills by catching a train back to Central train

station and practicing their orientation skills by identifying platforms and train stops, and

finding a seat on the train.

Guide Dogs aims to encourage children with vision impairment to be involved in sports

like karate as this is one of the best activities to improve balance and coordination.

MORE INFORMATION:

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT provides free services to more than 600 children and youth in

NSW and the ACT annually.
