AFL star handballs 1.5 million milestone in diabetes challenge
Former Adelaide Crows star Nathan Bassett will handball Sport Minister Kate Ellis the final
milestone in an Australia-wide challenge to raise awareness of diabetes and promote the
health benefits of sport tomorrow (Tuesday, 29 September).
The culmination of the Turning to Sport for Good Health campaign, a joint initiative between
the Australian Sports Commissions Active After-school Communities program and Diabetes
Australia, will be held during a sports gala event at Floriade in Canberra.
Bassett, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in 1997, and Ms Ellis will be joined by
hordes of children for the completion of the 1.5 million sporting passes challenge held
throughout the nation during Term 3 one sporting pass for every Australian with diabetes*.
The gala day will include children performing the campaign song, Turn to Sport and Play for
Life, on Stage 88 and nine sports holding activities for the children on the adjacent lawns.
The AASC is a free Australian Government program involving around 150,000 children each
term being introduced to over 70 sports.
