BRISBANE ABORIGINAL ARTISTS TAKE THEIR WORK NORTH
TO TOWNSVILLE
SEVEN well known Aboriginal artists, Lloyd Hornsby, Laurie Nilsen, Peter Muraay
Djerippi Mulcahy, Debbie Taylor, Raquel Jackson, Jennifer Herd and Bianca Beetson
will take their work north to raise awareness of Indigenous heart health. The Heart
Foundations East Coast Aboriginal Art Exhibition will be held at Townsville Cultural
Centre from Monday 10 August- Sunday 23 August 2009.
This free Art Exhibition celebrates the strength, tenacity and generosity of Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander communities in taking a stand to join the fight against heart
disease and demonstrate their commitment to Close the Gap
Heart Foundation CEO Cameron Prout said, Over the last 35 years, rates of heart
disease have significantly declined in Australia and other developed nations.
Unfortunately the same cannot be said of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander communities.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people between the ages of 25-34 are seven to
12 times more likely to die of heart disease than other Australians of the same age,
Mr. Prout said.
Through their work, these Aboriginal artists are able to share their personal stories
and culture. This exciting and unique Art Exhibition is a must see for the people of
Townsville.
