MEDIA ADVISORY NOTE

Epilepsy Queensland applauds Deputy Premier

Epilepsy Queensland congratulates the Deputy Premier Paul Lucas MP for

his openness in announcing his recent diagnosis of epilepsy.

Chief Executive Officer of Epilepsy Queensland, Helen Whitehead, said

The Deputy Premier has demonstrated considerable courage by making his

announcement today.  It’s only through talking about it that we will

raise community awareness about epilepsy and remove the stigma that can

lead to fear and discrimination.

Most people with epilepsy benefit from medication to keep their seizures

under control and are able to maintain a normal lifestyle.

Since the news of the Deputy Premier’s diagnosis we received a number of

calls regarding signs and symptoms of epilepsy.  Epilepsy Queensland is

always pleased to assist people with information and support, however a

diagnosis can only be made by a medical specialist.  We encourage anyone

with concerns about their health to make an appointment with their GP.

Epilepsy is the worlds most common serious brain disorder and

unfortunately still remains one the most feared and misunderstood

conditions in todays society. Although epilepsy affects more people than

muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, Parkinsons disease and motor neurone

disease combined, it continues to be a hidden disorder. Talking about it

helps.

More than 86,000 Queenslanders will experience epilepsy during their

lifetime with the majority of epilepsies first occurring in children.

The next peak time for diagnosis is in the elderly.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it is doubtful there

is any other medical condition so universally neglected due to a

combination of social stigma, low profile and lack of resources.

For over 40 years Epilepsy Queensland has been assisting Queensland

families who have been touched by epilepsy. Services include education,

counselling, information services, childrens and family support

programs, specialised training programs, support groups and advocacy.
