MEDIA RELEASE

Friday 4th  December

Field of Women LIVE returns to the MCG

Breast Cancer Network Australia today announced that on Friday May 7, fourteen thousand

women and 100 men will take to the field at the MCG forming Breast Cancer Network

Australia’s Pink Lady silhouette.

This powerful human display, ahead of the AFL’s Round 7 contest between the Demons and

the Western Bulldogs, will highlight the growing number of Australians affected each year by

breast cancer, and bring the statistics to life.

It is five years since Breast Cancer Network Australia’s

Field of Women

LIVE event was first

staged at the MCG. In that time the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer has

grown from 11,500 to 14,000, translating to another 500 women facing breast cancer each

year.

In announcing the event, BCNA CEO Lyn Swinburne, herself a breast cancer survivor,

explained.

“We have had so many women asking us when we were going to do the

Field of

Women LIVE

again at the MCG.  Those who donned the pink poncho in 2005 have told us

what a powerful experience it was for them to stand with friends and family and to feel so

supported.  Many have said it was the first time they saw themselves as ‘survivors’.

“We are delighted to be inviting people back to the MCG ahead of the game between the

Demons and the Western Bulldogs.”

The announcement that the

Field of Women LIVE

will return to the MCG in 2010 was made by

BCNA CEO Lyn Swinburne, with team Captains James McDonald (MFC) and Brad Johnson

(WBFC).

The AFL has thrown its full support behind the event and has called on everyone, no matter

which team they support, to come along on Friday 7 May, 2010 and support all those affected

by breast cancer.

Quotes:

James McDonald – Captain - Melbourne Football Club:

“I remember our involvement in the

Field of Women LIVE in 2005.  It was a really big success and created such a powerful image.

The boys at Melbourne are all behind this event.  Any way that we can help people affected by

breast cancer, we’re happy to give our support.”

Brad Johnson – Captain – Western Bulldogs:

“It means a lot to the Bulldogs to be involved

in the Field of Women LIVE.  It’s going to be a great event and we’re pleased we can do our

part to support it.  I’m sure the boys will be sneaking a look before the game - it will be an

experience we’ll never forget.”
