Hear the festive season

The festive season is the time to retreat, unwind and relax after a particularly

challenging year and provides the perfect opportunity to catch up with family and

friends.

Festivals, tennis, cricket, and open air cinema are just some of the fun experiences

people can look forward to over the summer. Many Australians, however, won’t be

able to enjoy these activities because of hearing loss.

If you want to catch all the action over the Christmas and New Year period, make

sure your hearing is as good as it can be.

Australian Hearing is urging older Australians to check their hearing.

Australian Hearing Managing Director, Mr Steven Grundy said that hearing loss is a

normal part of the ageing process that largely goes unchecked because of its gradual

onset.

“There is a high prevalence of hearing loss among people over 60. We know that 60

per cent of people aged in their 60s have a hearing loss and this increases to 70 per

cent for people in their 70s,” he said.

An easy first step to check your hearing is Australian Hearing’s national telephone

hearing test, Telscreen.

People can access the service by calling the toll-free number 1800 826 500 from a

landline phone and following the prompts to start the check.

Mr Grundy said that Telscreen provides the perfect opportunity for people to check

their hearing at home, from anywhere in Australia.

You may decide to then take the next step and get a face-to-face hearing screening

at one of Australian Hearing’s 110 hearing centres or 300 visiting sites around the

country,” he said.

So take action now and enjoy the sounds of summer.
