PODIATRY COUNCIL PRESIDENT WELCOMES
MEDICARE FRAUD INITIATIVE
Australasian Podiatry Council President Brenden Brown today welcomed the
governments crackdown on Medicare fraud.
According to recent press reports Medicare investigators have uncovered systemic
fraud in two programs that allow doctors and dentists to claim rebates for writing
plans and treating the chronically ill.
It is good to see the checks and balances that are essential to the effective delivery of
multidisciplinary health care to the chronically ill working. Chronic disease
management plans are a relatively recent innovation and the last thing we want to see
is good practice undermined. The Australasian Podiatry Council embraced these
checks and has openly worked with Medicare on a process of auditing he said.
We will be advising podiatrists, through their member associations, to revisit the
Medicare guidelines to ensure their participation in chronic disease management plans
is not only above reproach, but can be seen to be so.

Care in Chronic Disease Management aims to improve outcomes for people with
