MEDIA ADVISORY NOTE

Queensland’s first Camp E

Date:

Friday 13 November 2009

Time:

2.30pm

Place:

Epilepsy Queensland, 411 Vulture Street Woolloongabba

Friday afternoon 18 excited children aged 10 to 15 will be farewelled by

Little Poss (Epilepsy Queenslands mascot) as they head off to the

Sunshine Coast to attend a weekend adventure camp.  Camp E is the first

of its kind retreat for Queensland children who live with a sibling or

parent with epilepsy.

Camp E is a new initiative that provides an opportunity for children who

live with a sibling or parent with epilepsy to spend time with other

children who are dealing with similar situations and to participate in

activities that may be restricted by the familys complex needs and/or

financial situation Epilepsy Queensland CEO Mrs Helen Whitehead said.

The children will enjoy peer support, team building, leadership and

sports in a fun and relaxed environment with qualified and experienced

staff. All this would not be possible without the generous support of

The Good Guys Mrs Whitehead said.

The Good Guys Loganholme has chosen to support Epilepsy Queensland as

part of The Good Guys Local Giving Program which is run in conjunction

with United Way Queensland.  Money raised through the fundraising

initiative will be used by Epilepsy Queensland to fund Camp E.

Ms Airen Youhanna, proprietor of The Good Guys Loganholme is proud to

support such a worthwhile event that will make a difference to the lives

of these special children.  The store hopes to raise $5,000 this year to

ensure Camp E can continue in the future.

These children play significant roles in supporting and caring for their

loved ones.  It is important we recognise the contribution that they

make and offer them an opportunity to just be normal kids and forget

about the struggles they can face at home even if its only for a few

days Ms Youhanna said.

For the past 40 years Epilepsy Queensland has provided counselling,

education, support, training and research services.  With 10% of

Australians expected to have a seizure at some point during their lives,

Epilepsy Queensland is continually upgrading their services and programs

to help maximise the quality of life for those living with epilepsy,

their carers and families.
