MEDIA ALERT

For Immediate Release: Thursday 12 November 2009

It is hot out there…....and

St John Volunteers are always there to help you to stay safe

this summer….would you know what to do?

If you’re planning to take the kids to the Pageant on Saturday make

sure you are well prepared.  With the heat wave continuing a high

temperature forecasted, St John recommends the following tips to ensure

the Pageant is enjoyed by all:

Remember to take along any personal medication, e.g. asthma puffers, blood

pressure medication, etc.

Keep your fluids up by drinking plenty of water – avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks

Wear light loose fitting clothing, footwear and don’t forget a wide brimmed hat

Apply and re-apply sunscreen, when out in the sun

Be aware of the symptoms of heat stress –

some of which could include persistent

headache, nausea and vomiting, faintness, fatigue, and pale cool clammy skin.

For those who attend the Pageant and need assistance, there will be

approximately 100 trained St John Volunteers in attendance. Should you

need first aid on the day visit one of the St John First Aid Posts set

up in Victoria Square and at Kintore Ave or look for one of our Mobile

First Aid Units along the pageant route. Added to this, there will be

foot patrols on hand to assist. So enjoy the spectacle that the Pageant

brings and be assured that St John Volunteers will be on hand to help

you.

“It’s wonderful to know that at community events such as the Pageant,

our volunteers are always there to provide high level first aid

services to those in need” states St John Executive Manager Marketing

and Communications, Carol Raye.

Carol further stated

“The heat wave conditions are a timely reminder

that we should be correctly trained in First Aid knowledge and

techniques, and these skills need to be refreshed on a regular basis.

Knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference

and a First Aid Course will give you the skills and knowledge to

put your mind at ease as you and your loved ones have fun this

summer.
