Support for carers over the holiday season
It is no surprise that the Christmas period is considered to be one of the most stressful times of the year. Carers, in particular, may find the holidays extra stressful as they try to balance their caring role with the additional pressures of the festive season.
"It is important that carers know they can access support to help them cope," said Elena Katrakis, CEO of Carers NSW.
The Carer Line will be operational over the holiday period, except for public holidays. The Carer Line provides access to information, emotional support, referrals to a range of services and counselling. Carers can call the Carer Line 1800 242 636 (freecall except from mobile phones, mobile calls at mobile rates), Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
From 4 January, 2010, the Carer Line will be extending its hours. Tuesday to Thursday, carers will be able to access the Carer Line from 9am to 8pm (Monday and Friday will remain 9am- 5pm).
"We encourage carers to try and look after themselves over the Christmas period," said Ms Katrakis. "Sometimes that might mean finding 5 minutes here and there for a break."
Some stress less tips for the holiday season:
* Eat healthily
* Make time for exercise and relaxation
* Try to get enough sleep
* Share the added responsibilities
* Try and do one enjoyable activity every day
