Treating Type 2 diabetes: pills or treadmills?

– Expert available for comment –

A new report has found the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in Australia will nearly

double over the next 40 years, with one in seven Australians forecast to have the

disease by 2050.

The National Centre for Social and Economic Modelling study also found many

Australians who have type 2 diabetes now don’t manage their condition properly.

What does research show about the effectiveness of exercise in fighting the

disease, compared with common diabetes drugs?

How does exercise work to lower insulin resistance and improve glucose

metabolism?

What do studies show about weight training and diabetes prevention?

Do public health strategies place enough focus on exercise in diabetes prevention

and treatment?

RMIT University’s Professor Stephen Bird researches in the area of exercise and

diabetes.

He has published widely on resistance training for prevention and treatment of

diabetes, the impact of exercise on reducing the risk of chronic diseases, and

physical activity and older people.

Professor Bird is the Discipline Head of Exercise Sciences in RMIT’s School of

Medical Sciences.

He is available for interview on effective measures for the prevention and treatment

of type 2 diabetes.
