Expert comment on new Swanston Street plans –

All private vehicles and taxis will be banned from Swanston Street and four new

“city squares” will be established along the thoroughfare under a $25.6 million

redevelopment plan unveiled today by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle.

Why can’t Melbourne’s urban planners seem to get Swanston Street “right”?

What impact could the new redevelopment plans have on liveability and

sustainability in the CBD?

RMIT University’s Joe Hurley lectures in Strategic Urban Planning and

Environmental Pollution Management.

His research interests include sustainable cities and the future of Melbourne, with

his doctoral research focusing on sustainability and urban planning issues in

Melbourne suburbs.

A lecturer in the School of Global Studies, Social Science and Planning, Mr Hurley

is available for interview on the urban planning and sustainability issues related to

the new Swanston Street redevelopment.

For interviews: RMIT University’s Joe Hurley, (03) 9925 9015 or 0425 807 463.
