NAIDOC flag raising ceremony to mark the start of NAIDOC week
The City of Melbournes NAIDOC Week flag raising ceremony will take place today, Monday 7 July
2008 from 2pm outside Town Hall, with the Lord Mayor John So welcoming Indigenous community
members and inviting them to raise the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags.
This flag raising ceremony officially marks the start of NAIDOC Week 2008, which celebrates the
survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia.
The Lord Mayor John So said that the City of Melbourne
was proud to support and celebrate the
history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and would like to
encourage all Melburnians to participate in NAIDOC Week activities.
NAIDOC week is not only a great way to celebrate indigenous culture, but also build positive
community relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Make sure you take the opportunity to come into the City, where the theme will be Walking Talking
Living Black between July 6 - 13 to join in the many events and activities, the Lord Mayor said.
Councillor David Wilson, Chair of Community Services, said that NAIDOC Week was celebrated not
just in the Indigenous community, but also in increasing numbers of government agencies, schools,
local councils and workplaces.
This year there will be a strong focus on interactive student activities including Indigenous music
programs, speakers, arts and crafts, storytelling and study throughout Victorian schools.
In 2008 The City of Melbourne, has been a major supporter of NAIDOC Week, and we encourage
all to support the celebrations, Councillor Wilson said.
