Baptists urge PM to veto same-sex partnership laws
The National Director of the Baptist Union of Australia, Revd Dr Brian Winslade, has called
on the Federal Government to veto same-sex marriage legislation passed last Wednesday
by the ACT Assembly.
An overwhelming majority of Baptists in the ACT, and throughout Australia, support a
traditional understanding of marriage which excludes same-sex marriage.
Changes passed last week to the territorys Civil Partnership Act clearly weaken the
model of marriage affirmed by Baptists, and may set an unacceptable precedent for other
legislatures.
I urge Prime Minister Rudd to honour his 2007 election commitment to marriage by
disallowing the ACTs new civil partnership laws, he said.
Dr Winslade commended the Prime Minister for his past resolve in disallowing territory
laws which undermined and mimicked marriage, and indicated that Australian Baptists
would support similar intervention in response to the new laws.
